The new millennium is upon us, but while the century has changed,
the problems have not.
In the Palisades, believe it or not, traffic was our number one
criminal issue in 1999 and it is likely to remain so in the year
2000. I get more complaints about traffic issues than any other
issue.
People in this neighborhood are very concerned about speeding
on streets, missing stop signs, installation of traffic lights,
and road construction.
In response to this concern, the PCAís February membership meeting
will focus on ìTraffic and Transit in the Palisades.î
We have asked Gary Burch, Chief Transportation Engineer for the
District and Mr. Herb Leonard of Metro to come talk to us about
traffic and Metro bus service in the Palisades. We have also asked
a member of our local police division to attend.
So all of you have called me with questions about speeding, bus
service and traffic lights should come and directly address your
comments and questions to the people who really can make a difference.
As we go to press, members of the PCA Board are working with the
Field School to resolve some of the traffic problems posed by
its proposed move to the old Cafritz estate. What we are hoping
for is to arrive at a solution that works for both the school
and the community.
Based on our experience with both St. Patrickís and George Washington
University at Mount Vernon, we hope that a reasonable compromise
can be reached that allows the school to locate on the Cafritz
property without tying up rush hour traffic on Foxhall Road.
On a high note, I want to report that our membership campaign
was very successful. We had a great response and increased our
membership. Please renew your PCA membership if you have not already
done so.
And, finally, I hope to see all of you on February 26 at the ìNow
Thisî theater production, co-sponsored by the Palisades Citizens
Association and the Palisades Community Fund and hosted by the
Lab School of Washington. This is a special event intended to
celebrate the spirit of fun and creativity in the Palisades. Please
come! óCary Ridder
