NEWS FROM GW AT MT. VERNON

March 24, 2000 -- At its first quarterly meeting with the community, as required by the Board of Zoning Adjustment, representatives of GW at Mt. Vernon College announced that construction on the campus will begin May 20.
Phase One involves demolishing existing maintenance facilities and a pub and then building an addition to Somers dorm, an underground garage, 12 new tennis courts, redoing the soccer field and the addition of a new softball field.
Because of the construction and the large amount of dirt being moved around the campus, Mt. Vernon has decided to close its swimming pool this summer. Tennis has been disbanded until new courts are built.
Executive Dean Grae Baxter also said because of the work, Mt. Vernon will not host July 4 fireworks this year. However, the community is invited to fireworks on campus planned for Friday, April 28 at 8:30 pm as part of an end-of-the-year celebration for students.
On another issue, Mt. Vernon has developed parking policies that require students who are residents of the Mt. Vernon campus to register and park their vehicles on campus.
