CAROLINA
PARK CLEAN UP
June,
2000 -- On Saturday, May 6, over 25 residents of the Palisades neighborhood
helped make the neighborhood a better place by participating at a clean
up day at Carolina Park, located at the intersection of Carolina and Macomb.
"This is the most fun we've ever had," said Jill Minneman and her two
year old son, Adam, residents on Cathedral Avenue.
It was a hot day, nearly 90 degrees, and thanks to Starbucks who provided
the refreshments--water, pastries and, of course, coffee.
"We accomplished a lot, more than I thought we would in just four hours.
Many hands make the work light," says Karen Leder, head organizer.
With tools provided by DC Parks and Recreation, the following tasks were
accomplished: Wood chips were spread throughout the two playground areas.
A dead tree was cut down and removed. Leaves were raked along the fences
facing Potomac Avenue. Flowers were planted along the fences on Potomac
Avenue. Two large piles of wood chips were leveled and distributed to
create better paths into the park from Manning. New slats were placed
in the bridge connecting the playground to Manning.
Special thanks to all the volunteers who made this happen: Felicity Proctor,
Mark Oxley, Karen Leder, Cary Ridder, Lena Nirk, Jill Minneman, Maurice
Sanders, Linda Starke, Brian Reagan, Gregory O'Brien, Jim Henderson, Elizabeth
Powell, Holly Tippitt, Julie and Steve Stone, Gary and Patrick McNab,
Tom, Tyler and Adam Fulchert, Tedson Meyers, Barbara Power, Patti, Francis
and Sean Griffin, Peter Scott and Julie Russell, Carols Vazquea and Mary
Qualiana, Peggy Carson, Nicholas Nicolas.
In addition to future clean ups at the park, the Friends of Palisades
Parks hopes to work with DC Parks and Recreation to improve the playground
at the park.

KUDOS
to
Harold Gray and Alice Stewart, whose presentation on "The History of the
Palisades" attracted an audience of over 200 for the PCA May general meeting,
which was held at Sibley Hospital's Ernst Auditorium. There have already
been requests for a repeat. Alice wonders if there is anyone out there
interested in updating our history? The Palisades Community Fund would
consider a grant.
to
Alma Gates who has agreed to be the new head of the PCA traffic committee,
a big job. We are still looking for a zoning chair. Call Penny Pagano
at 338- 7926 to volunteer.
to
Karen Leder for her leadership in the successful effort to clean up the
Carolina Place park. She is now striving to get a large climbing structure
for the small park, which now has only swings and two small climbing dinosaurs.
to
Holly Tippett, another young activist, for her long push to get the Department
of Public Works to install a four-way stop sign at Sherier Place and Newark
Street in an area where many children play.
